Here's a guide to my favorite wine bars, trattorias, and special eating places along La Strada del Vino.

Look for my decal in the window. And tell them Divina Cucina sent you!

Since Roman times, San Casciano Val di Pesa was a stopping point before descending into the valley leading to Florence. The village is large and full of shops of all descriptions. There's also a huge weekly market.

Run by the same family since 1948, and very popular with locals, Nello's is one of my favorites. The tiny entrance fools you as the restaurant has grown to include new rooms. The menu is only one page--simple and traditional Tuscan food like Mamma makes! Of course! Because she's in the kitchen!
Nello is one of the few restaurants still using a working fireplace for cooking. And it has an incredible wine cellar; but, the house wine is excellent too. The mixed antipasto was rich--tomato bruschetta and three mixed crostini on warm bread (chicken liver, sausage with stracchino cheese, porcini mushrooms) as well as three sliced meats.
The penne with rabbit sauce (con coniglio) was a large portion, and my roasted pigeon was perfect. (I took half home.) We did well to order the mixed fried vegetables which included porcini. The table next to us had a huge platter of just potatoes cut like potato chips! My crème caramel was creamy and not overcooked. Each day they offer one special, such as tripe or salt cod (baccala). We're going back!
