Strawberries...fragole
I was born in April, so strawberries are my fruit! They are always part of my birthday cake, Easter desserts, and I eat as much of them as I can until they are gone. Florentines are famous for sweets, but usually do not serve dessert after dinner. However, they always serve fruit!
When my husband Andrea showed me his favorite way, I immediately adopted this new recipe. At the end of dinner, mom brings out a bowl of rinsed berries. Everyone helps themselves and slice the berries into their wine glasses (at family meals, a tumbler called gottino), and then adds a teaspoon or more of sugar to the berries and cover with red wine (which is never missing from the table!), stir and continue talking until the sugar is dissolved. Then mangi e bevi.
Eat the berries (MANGI) and drink the now sweetened wine infused with strawberry juice (BEVI).
A wonderful idea! Much simpler than the Bellini cocktail from Harry's Bar in Venice, but the same idea. In fact, when we do the same with peaches, we add white wine! The Bellini, invented by Arrigo Cipriani, is made from white peach juice and Prosecco.
