Puglia I Love You Trulli
I have been going down to Puglia several times since my first trip in 1990. I fell in love with the rich red soil and the gnarly old olive trees and the cone-shaped trulli and white washed villages.
This year, thanks to my meeting with Antonello and Laura of Southern Visions, a program in Puglia became possible. I went down to meet with them and we tweaked a program to create something really special.
Our tour starts in Bari, where we will see the women out in the streets making their orecchiette pasta, which we will also learn, one of my favorite pastas. On our way down to Alberobello where we will be staying for the week, we will stop in Polignano sul Mare for lunch.
Puglia is the producer of the hard wheat flour for bread making. We will visit a bakery in Altamura and learn how their fabulous bread is made. Then we head to Matera, famous for the cave dwellings.
We will shop the local market in Monopoli for ingredients for our cooking class, stopping for lunch in a local trattoria.
One of my favorite towns is the incredible Lecce, which we will visit before our tour of a local winery with a lunch and wine tasting.
We will cook using local ingredients and regional specialties from the source. Try your hand at making a mozzarella. Learn how to taste olive oil and appreciate true extra virgin quality from century old trees. We will meet and talk with the producers and share their passion for quality.
The days are spent exploring the area and meeting with local producers and friends, shopping for our ingredients for our cooking classes.
Throw in a couple of fabulous dinners out for the perfect week in Puglia.
